Gerber FCU Leadership Advocates for Members on Capitol Hill
FREMONT, Mich. (9/17/2026) Gerber Federal Credit Union President/CEO John P. Buckley Jr. and Senior Vice President/CFO Todd Visser recently joined nearly 500 credit union advocates from across the nation in Washington, D.C., to meet directly with lawmakers and regulators on issues affecting credit union members and communities.
During the annual credit union advocacy event, Buckley and Visser met with members of Congress and policymakers to discuss legislative priorities designed to protect consumers, strengthen local economies, and preserve access to affordable financial services.
"Our mission extends beyond the walls of our branches," said Buckley. "We have a responsibility to ensure the voices of our members are heard by those making decisions that impact their financial well-being. Advocacy is an important part of protecting the cooperative, member-focused model that credit unions provide."
Discussions focused on key initiatives, including efforts to combat check fraud, modernize outdated financial reporting requirements, and expand lending flexibility so credit unions can better meet the evolving needs of members, families, farmers, students, and small businesses.
The event also provided an opportunity to thank lawmakers for their continued support of the credit union movement and to highlight the positive impact credit unions have on the communities they serve.
"Every conversation we have with policymakers is ultimately about our members," said Visser. "Whether we're advocating for stronger fraud prevention measures or greater access to affordable lending, our goal is to help create better financial opportunities for the people and communities we serve."
As a member-owned financial cooperative, Gerber FCU remains committed to advocating for legislation and policies that support financial security, consumer protection, and economic opportunity.
